Poverty and Hunger Don’t Take a Summer Vacation

By Vernon Hills

We recently took a look at schools in our area, and the numbers were shocking: 1 in 3 kids receive free or reduced-cost lunches (and sometimes breakfast too) at school. In Alameda Unified School District alone, that’s over 3,000 kids.

During the summer months, that’s 3,000 kids who may go hungry unless they receive help.

Summer is also a tough time for kids who face homelessness, molestation, and domestic violence. During the school year, they have a safe place to go where the chaos and stress of home life are put on hold for at least a few precious hours. But when school lets out for the summer, those safeguards are gone.

That’s why your summer support is so important. Giving typically goes down during the summer as people travel or focus on the summer break, but the truth is that the needs of our residents go up. It can be a truly tough time — and so many women and children need our help!

That’s why we’re hoping that friends of SG will join our Summer of Hope campaign. When you pledge a gift for the months of June, July, and August, your gift will be DOUBLED thanks to a matching gift from a generous local family. That means you’ll help twice as many families get back on their feet again!

Even if you can’t give all three months, I hope you’ll send a special gift today to help these precious families make a new start. You can make this a true Summer of Hope for vulnerable families in our area!
